From Vision to Reality: Celebrating 20 Years of EMESRT

EMESRT is a global ‘safety by design’ initiative established by mining companies to identify and close the functional performance expectations gap between earth moving equipment users and equipment designers.

2025 proudly marks two decades of EMESRT’s Safety by Design journey from a visionary concept to a transformative reality in the mining industry.

Over the past 20 years, EMESRT’s commitment to advance the design of equipment and processes to improve safe operability and maintainability beyond standards has driven advancements in design and supported a culture of continuous improvement in the mining industry.

EMESRT celebrates this milestone by reflecting on the achievements and collaborative efforts of the dedicated advisory group members, technical working group members, and the wider EMESRT community, both past and present.

Since its formation, EMESRT has influenced several strategic developments in equipment design. In particular, the eight design philosophies depicting the industry’s common understanding of the design problems faced by the mining equipment users.

Since the publishing of the eight design philosophies, EMESRT, in collaboration with industry, has published more detailed and specific industry resource materials focusing on vehicle interaction improvement, tyre management improvement, and fire management improvement. The resources are available on the EMESRT website.

A lot has been achieved in 20 years, but there is always more work to be done.
