2 – Should we change?

Where are we at?

Asking the following questions:

  • What are our current vehicle interaction controls?
  • How well are they integrated with how we operate?
  • How do we check that they are working?
  • Are they mature and dependable?

and using the ICMM Innovation for Cleaner, Safer Vehicles (ICSV) Vehicle Interaction Maturity Framework can assist you to assess your baseline control current maturity.

What are the benefits?

There are many benefits for doing this work. These include:

  • Reduced exposure to situations that can lead to injuries or fatalities
  • A consequential reduction in equipment damage and downtime
  • Comprehensively reviewing design and operating controls to establish a baseline, before introducing technology
  • Improving performance measures and linking these to operational decision making
  • Demonstrating operationally integrated compliance at both company and regulator levels

A successful project can improve your overall business performance by confirming your baseline, addressing performance shortfalls, and then introducing improvements that fit your circumstances.

What are the challenges?

Improving vehicle interaction controls is a complex undertaking that requires a systematic and practical engineering-based project approach.

Extensive research and development of new technology react controls that, alert and advise operators (Level 8) and intervene independently of the operator (Level 9), has been undertaken over the last decade.

While these react control developments are progressing, there are few examples of successful commercial level operational deployments. For more information see the EMESRT Nine Layer Model of Control Effectiveness below

What does good practice look like?

Using these review resources will assist you to identify improvement opportunities based on your own situation. Please also see information about how other operations have improved and sustained their vehicle interaction controls.

When adapted for your circumstances, this information can also assist you in identifying improvement opportunities in existing controls as well as identifying additional improvement controls.
