Comparing MERV 16 and HEPA Filters

This paper by a team of four NIOSH technologists explores their analysis over an extended period comparing the quality of air inside vehicle cabins with either a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) vs a MERV 16 (minimum efficiency reporting value) filter deployed.  Two machines operating in similar environments at the one site were compared.

Findings indicated that the less flow restrictive MERV 16 filters performed as well as the HEPA filters – and required less maintenance and achieved higher cabin pressures than the HEPA filters.

The paper also presents information on:

  • maintenance failings to avoid in either filter deployment
  • methods for calculating filter efficiency
  • detailed results from the study for both filter types

Twenty six (26) references are given that the paper used to inform their opinions.
