Avoiding collisions in underground mines

Burgess-Limerick. Avoiding collisions in underground mines. Ergonomics Australia – HFESA 2011 Conference Edition 2011 11:7.

This 2011 Paper was presented at the Ergonomics Australia Conference, it examines 41 fatal underground collisions occurring in the USA since 2000 to assess control measures.

The paper uses mini-case studies that confirm restricted visibility is a common causal factor and suggest that the use of video cameras, and proximity detection linked to warning tones may be effective barriers in some situations.

It also identifies situations where video cameras, or proximity detection linked to a warning tone alone, may not be adequate controls while noting the role that directional control-response incompatibility may play in some situations.
